Les Perdigots ....

We think the best phrase in french to describe Les Perdigots is ‘en pleine nature’‘in the heart of the countryside’.  Les Perdigots is the centre of a very old farm that has retained all its history and character, and its renovation is being planned over a period of time,  to keep the spirit and feel of this lovely place intact.  Many of the farm implements and tools have been kept as, along with the buildings themselves, they tell the story of how this land has been farmed, and how its owners have lived, for over 300 years.  Like all the countryside hereabouts, the land has a natural bounty of trees, including sweet chestnut, wild cherry and apple, fig and lovely acacias, and the crowning glory is our magnificent ancient oak trees. They provide wonderful sculptures against the sky in winter, gentle shade in the hot summer months, and are host  to a profusion of birds including long tailed tits, warblers, blackbirds and song thrushes which provide a musical backdrop all day through.

Being situated on a gently sloping hillside, there are different and beautiful views from every aspect.  The views to the south of the Pyrenees are exceptional on clear mornings, and the passage of the sun and fluffy white clouds quite mesmerising over the fields and woods across the valley.

What does Les Perdigots mean?

As far as we can tell, it is in an Occitan dialect, and means ‘the little partridges’. This seems to tie up with the latin name for partridge which is perdix perdix.  The farm has been continuously worked for the last three centuries by the same family, and this would have been the dialect that they spoke, rather than the French language as we know it today.
